The tease
For twelve years the most famous chronograph on earth ran on a Zenith heart.
A generation later the two names sit on the same table. One is a billboard. One is a name most rooms still cannot spell. On the sheet, the less famous watch wins. Not as revenge. As hardware.
The loan
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona of the late 1980s and 1990s — the 16520 generation — used a modified El Primero. Rolex called it calibre 4030. High-beat, column-wheel, Zenith architecture under a Rolex signature, while Geneva finished an engine it would accept as its own. Around 2000 the 4130 arrived. The loan ended. The modern Daytona, now the 4131, is Rolex in the only way Rolex would have it: in-house.
Zenith kept El Primero. The Chronomaster Sport is that idea in a current steel sports case: calibre 3600, five beats a second, a tenth-of-a-second track that is the frequency made visible.
Same job today. Start, stop, reset. Steel. One hundred meters. Integrated bracelet. Tachymeter. COSC paper on both — protocol 3 on the sheet. A maker wrap on top of COSC does not buy a fourth point. The fourth point is a cased independent lab. Neither of these is that.
The market does not treat them as peers. The Daytona is the watch people who do not collect can still point at. Hollywood already knows the silhouette. In some rooms it changes hands for five times the Sport. The Sport is the watch connoisseurs mention when the room is no longer performing. Most people in the first room have never said Zenith out loud.
Fame is not a point. The invoice is not a point. Those facts are the story. They are not the score.
Two machines
Engine. The Sport is still the high-beat chronograph: 5 Hz, column wheel, manufacture train. The Daytona 4131 is 4 Hz, column wheel, vertical clutch — start and stop without the old lateral-clutch kiss on the seconds train. That clutch is real architecture. It is on the sheet. It is not a logo bonus.
Frame. The Daytona is the more compact sports chronograph: lower case, ceramic insert, Easylink as a short bracelet step — not closed-clasp on-wrist micro-adjust. The Sport wears larger and taller. Ceramic tachymeter. A sports clasp. Frame does not hand the Sport the episode. Engine is where it takes the lead.
Craft, beside the number. If the Sport shows the train, finishing is written next to Tenue Score. The Daytona on a solid back is Craft 0. The sheet does not subtract that from the total. It refuses to invent finishing it cannot treat as finishing.

Three points on a hundred. Not a humiliation. The high-beat stack is more watch than the compact clutch-and-case story can quite catch once the billboard is off both objects.

Finality
Rolex needed El Primero long enough to become Rolex again. Zenith kept El Primero long enough that the movement is still the plot of a steel watch the world can afford to ignore.
Stars will still wear the Daytona. Five times the money will still move in rooms that do not read casebacks. None of that is a scoring error.
On this sheet, the idea they once borrowed is still more watch than the icon they built after they stopped borrowing it.
